The king can move 1 square in any direction. In diagram 1 the black king is standing on e7. He may move in any direction shown by the blue lines but he can only move 1 square at a time. In diagram 2 he has moved to e6. We write this move Ke6

The king cannot be captured. If you move one of your pieces or pawns into a position where it could capture your opponent's king you must call out "check". Your opponent must move out of check.
In diagram 3 black's king is in check from the white rook. He moves his king to d8 so it is out of check .   Kd8

Sometimes a player may get out of check by capturing the piece which is giving check.
In diagram 5 black's king is again in check from the white rook but the black bishop on g3 can capture it. Black plays Bxe1. capturing the rook and black is no longer in check.

There is a third way of getting out of check. Sometimes a player may move a piece or pawn between the checking piece and the king. In diagram 7 black can play  Ne7,moving his knight between white's rook and his king.
                           Diagram 7                                                                                Diagram 8 Ne7

This is called interposing a piece.  It is important to remember that it is not effective if the checking piece is a knight. In diagram 9, the black king is in check from the white knight. If he were to move his bishop to e7, as in diagram 10,he would still be in check because the knight can jump over other pieces and the check cannot be blocked. Be7 would be an illegal move. A player must get out of check or resign from the game.

In the pictures that follow, see if you can find the best way for black to get out of check. It may be: moving the king, capturing the checking piece or interposing a piece.
