The bishop moves diagonally. It may move any number of squares along the diagonal as long as there is nothing in the way.

In picture 1 there is a bishop in the centre of the board. The green lines show all the squares it may go to. If a bishop starts off on a black square it can only reach black squares. Similarly a bishop which starts the game on a white square must remain on white squares. A bishop can only reach half of the squares on the board.  In picture 2 the bishop is on b2 and the green line shows the squares it can reach. It cannot reach d1 because there is a white rook in the way. It may capture the black knight on a4

In picture 3 the bishop which was on  b3 in the last picture has captured the knight on a4. We write Bxa4.

Now in picture 4 we have a bishop on d5. It will now move to e6. This is shown by the blue line.

Picture 17 Here we see 2 bishops in the centre of the board. They are very powerful since one of the bishops can move to the black squares on the board. The other can move to the white squares.
