In diagram1, below, the black knight and the black bishop are both guarded by the same pawn.This means that white can win material by taking the knight with his rook Rxd6.

In diagram 2, below, White has captured the knight with his rook.

Black will probably reply by taking the white rook with his pawn exd6

In diagram 3 Black has captured the rook with his pawn.

Now the black bishop is unguarded and white can capture it with his other rook playing Rxf6.

In Diagram 4, white has captured the bishop with his rook.

  White has gained some advantage because black has lost a knight and a bishop worth 3 pawns each (total loss = 6 pawns) while white has lost a rook worth 5 pawns.
