If White plays Qf7+ as in the diagram above black can play Kd6 as in the diagram below and his king is moving away from the edge of the board.
If white plays Kd5 as above black cannot move away from the edge of the board. He might play Kc7 as below.
After black has played Kc7 white can play Qc6+ The king must now move to b8 or d8
Black has played Kd8. He has been forced to the edge of the board.
