The Skewer 1
The skewer is a special kind of attack on a king or a valuable piece such as a rook or queen.
Behind the valuable piece is a less valuable piece. When the valuable piece is moved, the less valuable
piece can be captured.
In diagram 1 the white bishop on c4 is attacking the black king which is in check. When the king moves, the bishop can capture the queen on g8.
At the same time, the black rook on a1 is attacking the white queen on d1. If she moves, the rook may capture the knight on g1.
