In diagram 9a below black has moved his rook to e8. White is in check. He must move his king to d1 (or he can put his queen on e2 but it will be taken.)
In diagram 9b below white has moved
his king to d1
In diagram 9c black has played Ne3+. The black knight puts the white king in check and at the same time it attacks white's queen. When white moves out of check the knight will capture his queen.
