Diagram 7 shows the problem again.

White can counterattack. In diagam 7a He has moved his rook to f1 and black is in check. It does not matter what nasty thing he intends to do he must get out of check first.

Diagram 7                                                      Diagram7a

In diagram 7b black has played Ke8. He has moved his king out of check. In diagram 7c, white has played Rb1. He has moved his rook to b1 so the knight is no longer attacking it. The rook now defends the pawn on b2.

Now in diagram 8 it is white's move. Black is threatening to take white's pawn with his queen. If he does this white will be checkmated next move.

In diagram 8a white has moved his pawn to d8 where it can be promoted. What should he do now?

Should he promote his pawn to a queen or promote his pawn to a knight?
