A check can be a very powerful weapon since it can force your opponent to make a move you want him to make.

In diagram 1, below, it is black's move. White's queen is guarded by his king but black can use a check to make the king move away.

3.White has played Kxf1, capturing the rook with his king, but his queen is now unguarded.

5.Look at diagram 5, on the right. White's queen is attacking black's rook which is guarded by black's king. Can you see how white can make the black king move away. White needs to make a sacrifice.
Set up the position on a chess board and when you think you have the answer
2.Black plays Rf1+. The only way white can get out
of check is to take black's rook.

4.Black now plays Qxf1+, capturing white's queen.
The result of these exchanges is that black has lost a rook (5 points) but captured white's queen (9 points)
